Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Jerome Fitzgerald was presented with a copy of the documentary, ‘Womanish Ways, Freedom, Human Rights and Democracy; The Women’s Suffrage Movement 1948-1962’ from the film’s producer, Marion Bethel. According to Ms. Bethel she started the project in 2002 and completed it in 2012. “It is a culmination of a lot of blood, sweat and tears”, Ms. Bethel stated. The film is based on the Women’s Suffrage Movement, 1948-1962 and its leaders, Mary Ingraham, Eugenia Lockhart, Doris Johnson, Mabel Walker and Georgiana Symonette. Through 100 hours of interviews with relatives, associates and other prominent Bahamians Ms. Bethel along with co-producer Maria Govan captured a defining period in Bahamian history.
Minister Fitzgerald told Ms. Bethel that the Ministry will obtain copies of the film to place in its schools and public libraries so that students and the wider public can be educated about this important era of Bahamian history. The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is co-hosting two special showings of the film at the Galleria Cinemas, John F. Kennedy Drive on Wednesday 29th and Thursday, 30th May, 2013.
