Minister of Tourism Obie Wilchcombe used a Bahamas 40th anniversary of Independence party during Caribbean Week in New York city as an opportunity to update travel writers and editors about the many developments taking place in the Islands of The Bahamas, including the addition of gaming on Bimini.
The Ministry of Tourism invited top travel writers to the popular 40/40 Club in New York. While the guests enjoyed Bahamian music and cuisine, Minister Wilchcombe pointed out that the Genting Group, based in Malaysia, is targeting July to open a casino at Bimini Bay.
“But on top of the casino, there is going to be a new hotel and Genting World is going to come to cause Bimini to become a unique and special place for the world to come and see,” he said. “So I am inviting you to be a part of what we are trying to do. We are inviting you to come to our country to join in the spectacular nation that we are still building and to be a part of the Bahamian people. While you are there, please mix with the people. You will find they are very friendly.”
Minister Wilchcombe told media that The Bahamas offers multiple island destinations. He said each one gives unique and memorable experiences.
“Our country is about to enter a new phase of our development,” he said. “Many of you know Nassau and Paradise Island and you know maybe Grand Bahama. But our Bahamas is more than just those two islands. Our Bahamas is many islands. In fact, we say that we have 700 islands. But the truth is, we have about 16 inhabited islands that you are seeing more and more development in.”
The Bahamas’ marketing focus will be on the many memorable experiences of the major islands and the exceptional people who inhabit them, Minister Wilchcombe said. He said travel writers would receive information on the items from the staff and agents of the Ministry of Tourism.
