A spokesman for the Bahamas military says authorities stopped two vessels carrying more than 100 Haitian migrants amid an apparent surge in illegal immigration.
Lt. Origin Deleveaux of the Royal Bahamas Defense Force says 93 Haitians were detained on suspicion of illegal immigration Tuesday after their sloop was stopped near uninhabited Green Cay south of New Providence.
Several hours earlier, a migrant boat was grounded on New Providence, the island that includes Nassau. Authorities detained 16 Haitians from that vessel and were searching the area for more.
Deleveaux says all of the migrants appear to be in good health and will likely face deportation proceedings back to their home country.
The Bahamas has detained more than 1,100 migrants since January, nearly surpassing the total for all of 2012.
