The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology hosted an orientation session for sixteen new Cuban teachers who will be posted in schools in New Providence, Grand Bahama and other Family Islands. This group of educators will give service in the areas of Mathematics, Science, Technical and Vocational Studies and Special Education at the high school level.
Mrs. Patricia Collins, Deputy Director of Education responsible for Management and Administration was present to welcome the newcomers and explained that the orientation exercise was designed to acquaint the teachers with the Bahamian curriculum. She described past Cuban teachers as diligent, hardworking, and persons who became a real part of the communities where they taught. DDE Collins stated that the Ministry is extremely pleased with the partnership between both countries.
Mr. Marcellus Taylor, Deputy Director of Education with responsibility for Planning and Development presented an overview of the Bahamian educational system during session one of the orientation. He explained the hierarchy of the Department of Education and some of the cultural and social challenges that the educators could face while teaching in The Bahamas.
Deputy Director of Education, Mr. Marcellus Taylor greeted and spoke to Cuban Teachers about the Bahamian educational system.
The teachers also heard from Curriculum Officers about subject specific matters, Ms. Ollymae Knowles, Assistant Director of Education, Special Services Division about classroom management and Mrs. Sharon Pratt-Rolle, First Assistant Secretary, Teacher Recruitment Unit concerning Human Resources matters.
