1,200 Women Abused Annually

The face of domestic violence in The Bahamas is uglier than expected with the most recent statistics revealing that over 1,200 women are abused annually.

Director of the Crisis Centre Dr. Sandra Dean Patterson acknowledges that this number may be far lower than what it actually is and is too high for a country with so few people.

Dr. Dean-Patterson, a noted psychiatrist, went on to describe domestic violence in The Bahamas as an ‘epidemic’.

Apart from the many women who are victims, statistics show that hundreds of children fall in the same category each year.

“We have far too many children being abused in this country,”  Dr. Dean-Patterson said.
