A man charged with firearm and ammunition possession charges must wait five weeks before he learns if Chief Magistrate Joyanne Ferguson-Pratt will grant him bail pending trial.
The chief magistrate told 20-year-old Shaquille Bain she was not minded to make a decision on bail until after his February 13 hearing on a housebreaking charge.
Police prosecutor Inspector Clifford Daxon had objected to bail, claiming there is a likelihood he would re-offend. However, Bain’s attorney, Ian Cargill, argued that the court could electronically monitor his client, who has no previous convictions.
Chief Magistrate Ferguson Pratt said she would set the matter down for a hearing on March 4 and would make a decision on bail based on the outcome of Bain’s hearing before the other court.
In Tuesday’s arraignment in Gun Court, Bain pleaded not guilty to possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition, offences alleged to have been committed on January 23.
On the day in question, Drug Enforcement Unit officers executed a search warrant at a home on Milton Street and found a handgun along with ammunition.
