Tropical storm Bret continued to gain strength in the Atlantic Ocean off the Bahamas. Although Bret, the second storm of the season, moved closer to the Bahamas – about 65 miles (105 kilometers) northwest of Great Abaco Island, according to the National Weather Service – it is expected to move out to sea later in the day.
Despite the forecast Grand Bahama Island and the Abaco Islands in the northwest Bahamas remained under a tropical storm warning Monday morning.
Bret’s maximum sustained winds were 50 mph (85 kph) and it was drifting northeast at 3 mph (6 kph). The storm could dump two to four inches of rain in the northwest Bahamas but is expected to begin moving north-northeast as it strengthens over the next day or two.
