As law enforcement beef up their presence at the Mexico border, one United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) official suggests that there may be an increase in the transport of drugs through The Bahamas.
The agent, who cannot be identified due to the sensitivity of his position, addressed the Rotary Club of Lucaya yesterday, touching on the agency’s role in assisting the government in their efforts to stop the flow of narcotics into the country.
“Is it changing? Right now I think it’s more of a stabilization. As the border situation gets more tied up with more border patrol and ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement)… I think you’re going to see an increase back over here. Unfortunately, at the same time, with the terrorism war and everything else going on, we’ve lost assets. And everybody knows that, so it’s going to eventually come back this way.”
The DEA has maintained it presence in The Bahamas, and together with the Royal Bahamas Police Force’s Drug Enforcement Unit, are utilising all resources available in the fight.
