Morton Salt general manager Glenn Bannister said that due to excessive rainfall, the Inagua plant is forced to temporarily “scale back on production and workforce” until weather conditions become more suitable.
In the meantime, two-thirds of Morton Salt employees will be laid off as of August 8, until salt can be produced.
With more than 26 inches of rain over the past seven months, Morton Salt has encountered problems with excessive rain reversing the salt production process and dissolving the crystals in the ponds, leaving nothing to harvest.
A company-issued statement said that Morton Salt will continue to monitor the weather and salt ponds in Inagua, and will resume production as soon as conditions allow.
“As a long-time member of the Inagua community, Morton is committed to its operation and employees”.
