There is “no need” for Bahamian trade unions to seek unrealistic wages and employment terms from their employers, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) president arguing that “survival of the business” was paramount.
Obie Ferguson, who is also an attorney specialising in labour-related matters, told Tribune Business that the Bahamas ought to follow the UK’s lead and split the business community into different “categories” when it came to dealing with issues such as minimum wage and pension plan increases.
This, he argued, would split the private sector into businesses who could absorb a rise in, say, the minimum wage to $210 per week, as the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) is suggesting, and those that could not.
