The new Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium isn’t even competed as yet, and already, The Bahamas has been forced to withdraw from two major sporting events – the most recent one, the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships.
Whereas the completion of the stadium itself was the primary reason for the withdrawal of Team Bahamas from the second round of qualifying for the 2014 Soccer World Cup, the withdrawal from the 2014 World Juniors is a different story.
According to Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Charles Maynard, hosting the biggest athletics championships in the world for junior athletes is a venture that the government simply couldn’t facilitate at this particular time.
A preliminary bid was submitted during the Daegu World Championships, and the deadline for submission of financial documents, was yesterday.
“There are some things that we were unable to put together in time with the main feature being the guarantee of funding which would have been in the area of $9 million,” said the minister yesterday.
