Fraudsters Mar PM’s Community Building Effort

Rotten apple

Police have launched an investigation into fraudulent activity connected to Volunteer Bahamas, a community-based initiative announced by Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham several months ago as part of his administration’s overall response to crime.

Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Charles Maynard told The Nassau Guardian yesterday that persons have been using the Volunteer Bahamas name to solicit goods, services and money from corporate partners, who assist his ministry from time to time.

Maynard said some of the people targeted by the fraudsters became suspicious and contacted the ministry, which then contacted the police.

“After two occasions we notified the police and they told us this is not the first time fraudsters have used causes to get goods, services and money,” the minister said.

“After the hurricane (Irene) they did the same thing. They said they were calling from the Red Cross or Salvation Army and even got a check from a church which they could not cash.”

Maynard said it is unfortunate that some people are using Volunteer Bahamas for fraudulent and personal gain.
