Complaints by a Grand Bahamian woman, who claims she is being harassed by two police officers who raped her last year, have been falling on deaf ears.
Only after a protest by a local advocacy group calling themselves the “Justice League” have the police taken the complaints seriously.
Deputy Police Commissioner Marvin Dames finally announced that several officers from the Complaints and Investigative Unit will head to Grand Bahama to assist with investigations into the alleged rape victim’s claims that she is being harassed by the two police officers who assaulted her.
The Justice League is made up of talk show hosts, Erin Ferguson and Lincoln Bain; businessman Etheric Bowe; Utah Taylor; anti-crime activist, Rodney Moncur and a few others.
The Justice League said it believes that the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) has conducted itself in a “manner that is in direct conflict with several of the basic duties that Bahamian citizens should expect from the police.”
The group says ever since the alleged incident, the victim has not been treated with sensitivity by investigating officers.
“The alleged rapist received police bail, which is outrageous for someone being charged for rape. The preliminary hearing was delayed several times because the alleged rapist failed to appear,” said the group.
“No bench warrant was issued for his arrest.”
The group also claims that the victim started getting threatening text messages and that evidence in the case was “misplaced”.
“The alleged rapist harassed the rape victim at her job on several occasions. The police were called and the rape victim was informed that there was nothing that the police could do,” the Justice League alleged.
