Minister of the Education T. Desmond Bannister accepts one of the 1,200 books from Ms. Clare Symonette, local representative for Houghton Mifflin International Publishers that will go to primary schools in the MICAL District. The schools lost all of their text books during Hurricane Irene.
Ms. Clare Symonette, local representative for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt International Publishers presented Minister of Education T. Desmond with 1200 textbooks, teaching and other educational materials for primary schools in the MICAL District that were impacted by Hurricane Irene.
Ms. Symonette in presenting the materials to Minister Bannister noted that Houghton Mifflin Harcourt International Publishers’ partnership with the Ministry has existed for some forty-five (45) years.
She further stated that when it came to their attention that the MICAL schools had lost all of their materials in the hurricane, they were pleased to assist them in restoring their school’s operation.
Minister Bannister thanked, Ms. Symonette donation of reading/language arts, mathematics, science textbooks and teacher materials for the primary schools. He noted that he was impressed that some seven months after Hurricane Irene the publishing giant provided the materials. Four pallets of the materials were shipped from the company’s regional base in Puerto Rico to The Bahamas for distribution to the schools.
“This donation will impact particularly those students who are sitting the Grade 3 and Grade 6 GLAT Exams and the Rigby Reads Diagnostic Test”, Minister Bannister stated.
The books and materials are the 2012 editions and will be distributed to the schools prior to the start of the new school year.
