Schoolboy Shot in Head

An eighth grade student of T. A. Thompson Junior High School was in critical condition in hospital last night after he was shot in the head on his way home from school.

The shooting took place in the area of John and Blue Hill Roads, not far from the Naomi Blatch Primary School.

The incident occurred just before 4:00pm as the boy was standing on a bus stop.

Police said when they arrived on the scene they met him lying on the ground in a pool of blood.

Superintendent Stephen Dean, officer in charge of the National Crime Prevention Office, told reporters it is believed the student was struck by a stray bullet.

He said the information was sketchy and police had no one in custody in connection with the shooting.

Also on the scene was Minister of Education Desmond Bannister, who said he was saddened to hear a child was shot. “It brings back this senseless violence that we have,” Bannister said.

The 13-year-old boy’s identity was not made public.
