Supt Hulan Hanna police press liaison officer reported that at 10p.m. police received information of a robbery. He reported that a male taxi driver told police that at 8p.m. while in the area of Breezes Hotel and Resort a male asked to be taken in the area of Stapledon Gardens.
Mr. Hanna reported that while in the area of Holy Trinity Anglican Church, the passenger asked the taxi driver to pick up a pedestrian. “Upon entering the taxi the second passenger produced a gun and he along with the first passenger then proceeded to tie up the taxi driver and placed him the back seat,” said Mr. Hanna.
Both men then took control of the taxi, they picked up a third passenger and then proceeded to the Blue Hill Heights area off Harold Road, where they robbed the taxi driver. Mr. Hanna said after robbing the taxi driver, he was then placed into the hood of a car which had its engine removed.
He said the trio then drove to Shell Service Station located East Bay Street and robbed the establishment of money, phone cards and grocery items. Mr. Hanna said an All Points Bulletin (APB) had been placed on the police network after police had been tipped off by gas station employees.
He said the suspects were spotted in on Lincoln Boulevard where police gave chase.
Mr. Hanna said the suspects then left the taxi and fled into a nearby residence causing the occupants to run out in fear for their lives.
He said officers then surrounded the home and called in the Police Canine Unit and used tear gas to flush out the suspects. The suspects were taken into a custody where a Mack 10-automatic weapon was recovered.
The three suspects aged 18, 22 and 28 were all arrested and are assisting police with their investigation.
