Two men brandishing guns robbed the all-inclusive Club Mediteranee Resort on Paradise Island of $55,000 around 10 o’clock last night, shooting a male employee and striking fear into other workers and guests, police said.
The two gunmen, one of whom was described as being tall with a “rasta-type” hairstyle, entered the establishment reportedly attacking some of the employees, police said.
They also report that the men then demanded cash and were given the $55,000. While making their escape the gunmen shot a 26-year-old employee in the finger.
Officials at Doctor’s Hospital confirmed that the employee was admitted there last night. They said that his condition was stable and that he was undergoing surgery.
Up to press time, the Bahama Journal could not obtain a statement regarding last night’s events from Club Med authorities.
Representatives of their Florida offices usually make press statements regarding Club Med. They assured, however, that an official statement would be forthcoming.
Superintendent of Police Hulan Hanna said that the police are leading an extensive investigation into the matter. He also made an appeal for assistance from the public.
“We are appealing to persons who may have been in the area of Club Med or anywhere on Paradise Island and noticed at least two persons fleeing from that area around the time given to contact the police,” he said.
In light of the recent upsurge in crime including sexual offences, calls for the re-introduction of the Cat O’ Nine Tails emerged from diverse sectors of the public earlier this week, including Mr. Hanna.
Superintendent Hanna told the Bahama Journal that extra measures to curtail crime will be enforced immediately, particularly as the Christmas holidays approach.
