No Threat To Oil Supply

In light of the impending war in Iraq Minister Fred Mitchell assured Bahamians on Wednesday that there has not been a threat to the supply of petroleum in The Bahamas

Minister Mitchell held a press conference at the House of Assembly on Wednesday after his return from a two-day visit to Guyana and Barbados, where he attended the 11th Meeting of Community Council of Ministers.

Addressing certain issues that were discussed at the conclave, and giving insight into The Bahamas’ position, Minister Mitchell said

“You can say we are a part of the Caribbean Single Market Economy but the Prime Minister said in July that he would be giving the Bahamas’ position on that issue in July this year. Work continues on that,” he said.

“It appears that the situation in Venezuela is easing, and that most countries, including our own, have been doing surveys over the past weeks to be sure that the situation as it regards petroleum was adequate to the country. And at no time, although there has been a rise in the price of oil and gasoline in the country, there has not been a threat to the supply of oil,” he said.

“This is a matter which we have to watch. It appears that there is a war which is eminent. So that is another thing that we are watching quite closely so that the country can be in a position to have an uninterrupted supply of petroleum,” he said.

“Heads of Government will be asked to define a position on Iraq, because our position is, of course, the United Nations is the body which should settle international disputes. And that position is not going to change,” he said.
