Time to get rid of that “tacky tourism,” according to Tourism Minister Obie Wilchcombe, but he’s been saying that for some months.
Now it’s time for action instead of more talk. Sophisticated tourists expect a clean and safe environment, a wide variety of activities available any time of day, five-star hotels and service.
The proximity of The Bahamas to the U.S. has always done well for us, particularly when people want to get away but are afraid to travel far.
Without that fear factor, the harder it will be to keep our product attractive. Other countries are finding innovative “hooks” to appeal to targeted groups, and The Bahamas could do the same thing.
However, it is important to remember that despite all the advertising that could lure visitors, nothing beats five-star treatment.
