Murder Count Reaches 15

After nearly two weeks of calm in the capital, police were busy this morning investigating a murder, a police shooting and the discovery of a 9 mm gun and 30 rounds of live ammunition that occurred in the wee hours of the day.

At approximately 5 o’clock police responded to a telephone call that gunshots were heard in the subdivision of Eastern Estates.

Officers entered the house from where the shots were heard and discovered the body of a man in the closet of one of the bedrooms.

His hands were fastened together with duct tape and he had sustained gunshot wounds to the chest, police said. Police believe the man was a fisherman in his mid to late 60s.

He is also believed to have been a resident of either Eastern Estates or Key West Street.
Police said that there was evidence that drawers in the house had been searched and some items, including jewelry, may have been taken during the ordeal.

Although they are following a number of “good” leads as they carry out their investigations, police are asking that members of the public submit any information they might have regarding the incident.

In a separate matter, police reported that earlier this morning officers were patrolling the area of Lexington Avenue when a man alerted them that he saw another man trying to break into a neighbourhood bar.

The officers spotted a man who fit the description they were given and after he failed to give a satisfactory reason for being in the area they took him into custody, police said.

The suspect was placed in the police cruiser and as they made way to the Grove Police station the suspect escaped from the vehicle and attempted to flee, according to police reports.

One of the police officers pursued him on foot, recaptured him and placed him back in the patrol car, police said.

According to reports, as they continued on their way to the police station, the suspect attacked both the female driver and her male colleague and attempted to disarm one of them.

Shots were fired and the suspect was fatally hit in the chest, police said.

During the incident, the officers lost control of the car which partially turned over, according to reports. The police officers received minor injuries but received treatment at the Princess Margaret Hospital. The vehicle was extensively damaged.

Police were unable to obtain the identity of the suspect and are asking members of the public to contact them if they know of any missing relative.

The suspect, who is believed to be in his 30s, was dressed in a pair of blue jean trousers and a long-sleeved sweatshirt.

In another incident, police were reportedly on mobile patrol in the area of Village Road and Montagu Avenue around 12:40 this morning when they noticed a white Daewoo Cielo registration # 82857 and a green Honda Accord registration #114480, both of which were stationary at the time.

The officers conducted a search of both cars and their occupants and found a 9 mm weapon and 30 live rounds of corresponding ammunition, police said.

Two men, one 22 and a resident of Carmichael Road, the other a 24-year-old resident of Regency Park, were arrested and taken into custody.
