BIFS To Explore Repositioning The Bahamas Financial Services Sector

The Bahamas Institute of Financial Services (BIFS) will celebrate Financial Services Week with a five-day conference beginning May 5. The event, previously known as Bankers Week will allow professionals and policy-makers within The Bahamas financial services sector to examine the condition and direction of this vital industry. Prime Minister Perry Christie and Hon. Allyson Maynard-Gibson, Minister of Financial Services and Investments, will open the conference which proceeds under the theme Repositioning The Bahamas Financial Services Sector.

The annual event is an opportunity for persons involved in the financial services sector to come together to talk about what is going on, and to find out which actions are being undertaken by law makers as it relates to the industry, said conference organizer and BIFS Executive Administrator Kim Bodie.

The 11 seminar topics for examination during Financial Services Week were chosen from among the issues relevant to the growth and progress of the industry, said Mrs. Bodie. Topics include OECD Tax Exchange Information, Foundation Law, The Benefits of Ship Registry and Maritime Law, Repositioning the Offshore Insurance Industry and Retraining the Labour Pool. The Bahamas Association of Compliance Officers is scheduled to produce a short dramatic presentation on the Risk of Non-Compliance.

Chairman of the BIFS Education Committee, William Delancy, noted that the conference seminars looks at a number of allied industries, including law, insurance, maritime services and labour issues. This is not solely a bankers conference, said Mr. Delancy. We have designed the programme to appeal to other industry professionals as well as members of the general public who are interested in finding out about international issues that affect the government and private citizens.

Registration for the conference continues at BIFS Headquarters on Market Street. Morning and afternoon sessions cost $40, and luncheon presentations, delivered by Prime Minister Christie and the Hon. Glennys Hanna-Martin, are priced at $50. Students in the College of The Bahamas School of Business will be admitted at a reduced rate. Representatives from other tertiary institutions may contact BIFS for pricing information.
