Business Decline Prompts Resort Terminations

The press release issued by the resort did not say exactly how many staff were let go, but it said the dismissals were necessary in order to reduce its costs.

“As a result of the US recessions resulting from the terrorist attack and threats, the US-led war in Iraq, the SARS epidemic and the world population’s fear of travelling far from hoem, business levels at our resort have been negatively affected,” said the release.

Some of the dismissed workers will be considered for the 300 casino jobs that are expected to come on stream soon at the resort, according to the press release.

The 300 job opportunities are expected to come on line when the casino at Our Lucaya opens.

Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, which manages the Westin and Sheraton at Our Lucaya, will continue to focus on the successes of the resort, and on making Grand Bahama a premier destination in the Caribbean, said the release.
