The report also concluded that The Bahamas needs a National Development Plan to address its “considerable social and economic challenges”.
Over the past year both the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and the Tourism Taskforce on Trade Liberalisation have carfully considered the Bahamian readiness and ability to compete effectively over the long haul in the face of FTAA, WTO and the CSME.
Both groups have independently undertaken in-depth research on the country’s competitive capacity and in the main have reached some urgent conclusions.
“It has become abundantly clear to us that unless dramatic and sustained efforts are quickly undertaken to address serious decisions in our social and economic fabric, our ability to compete in the future will be seriously undermined.
“Without such action, there will be serious consequences such as not meeting future needs for job creation, business development and government revenue,” said newly elected Chamber president Winston Rolle.
