Prime Minister Perry Christie yesterday spiked comments made by US Ambassador Richard Blankenship, regarding the possibility that The Bahamas may have lost out on receiving $300,000 earmarked for the lighting of the Inagua airport, as being “factually incorrect”.
Mr. Christie, who was speaking at a press conference held yesterday during the 24th Caribbean Heads of Government Meeting in Montego Bay, Jamaica, used the opportunity to clear up The Bahamas’ position on the signing of the Article 98 immunity amendment to the International Criminal Court (ICC) Treaty, and also The Bahamas’ non-ratification of the treaty itself.
Also at the conference were Foreign affairs minister Fred Mitchell, Attorney General Alfred Sears and Trade minister Leslie Miller.
Mr. Christie said The Bahamas is not amongst the six Caribbean countries that have since been said to have had military aid cut off by the US, as it has not yet ratified the ICC Treaty.
He said in an earlier report on Thursday morning:
“We think he is factually incorrect and we will issue a statement to that effect. We have proceeded on the basis of the best possible advice.”
