Bahamas Electricity Corporation has taken legal action against several of its largest deliquent consumers who contribute to the company’s $35 million in outstanding private sector accounts, said assistant manager of credit and collections, Ervin Ken Dean.
Yesterday, Mr. Dean expressed regret that BEC might have to diconnect electricity supply to delinquent consumers who account for more than one third of the company’s customer base.
BEC, over the past two years, has spent between $8,000 and $10,000 per month on advertising to encourage customers to pay their bills on time.
The new proactive approach is to help shore up the company’s dwindling cash flow. It is expected that one of the first accounts the company will pursue is that of Cabinet Minister Leslie Miller who apparently is tens of thousands of dollars in arrears.
