Responding to a question from a member of the press, the Minister revealed the existence of a probe, saying that the Attorney General’s office is presently assisting his ministry and the Department of Immigration with their efforts.
Mr. Peet did not release the names or ranks of the four officers in question.
The Minister, who has “neither the patience nor the tolerance for corruption,” said he could only comment at this stage that wherever the evidence in the matter leads, “we will go.”
Mr. Peet said that while he would defend the honour of the “vast majority” of immigration officers who are not corrupt, he would never defend any officers who may be involved in illegal activities.
The minister said that what he did not appreciate were sweeping allegations about officers in general, without any evidence pertaining to specific persons committing specific offences.
