He said the industry had never been regulated or organized but the BCA would change that by implementing professional standards “to create accountable, ethical and knowledgeable contractors in every trade,” he said.

The BCA will seek to partner with vocational schools, banks, insurance companies, suppliers, the government and private developers to support the growth of the industry.

Mr. Myers said the association is already in the process of meeting with potential partners and committees have been formed to move the agenda forward.

Also addressing the BCA luncheon at the Republic Restaurant were Robyn Ogilvie, head of the Grades and Standards Committee, who said all new BCA contractors will be required to pass an exam to become licenced. The licence will be based on Florida legisltion. Existing qualified contractors will be “grandfathered” into the BCA.

The BCA has launched a website (www.bahamiancontractors.com) for members and the public to access the latest industry news. The site will eventually include updates from subcommittees,information on human resources, project lists, supplier advertisements and links to members’ web pages.

The BCA was formed in 1960 and today has over 60 members, from the smallest plumber to the largest general contractor.
