The capture of Saddam Hussein, 66, on Saturday brought an end to a massive manhunt by American forces and their allies since their no-holds-barred March 20 “pre-emptive” strike against Iraq.
The object of an unrelenting search for over eight months, the deposed strongman was found in an underground crawl space in a farmhouse outside hisTikrit hometown.
With a $25 million reward promised for his capture, Mr. Hussein reportedly had in his possession US $750,000 and a loaded gun at his side.
In late July, Mr. Hussein’s two sons were killed by US troops in the northern Iraq city of Mosul after a tipster betrayed their hideout.
Asked to comment on the capture of their father, Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Public Service, Fred Mitchell said he had nothing to say.
With the Bahamas regarded as a possible “soft target” for terrorists, there was also no word on how the news may affect the Bahamas’ current alert status.
