The Ministry of Trade and Industry advised straw vendors yesterday that because of the extensive damage caused by Hurricane Frances to the panels of the straw market frame, and with the possible threat of Hurricane Ivan, the Straw market will remain closed until further notice. This will ensure the safety of those who occupy the straw market, said the ministry.
Some straw vendors yesterday claimed that the government had done nothing to provide any kind of shelter or protection before frances and is now asking them to close up their stalls with Ivan threatening.
Although they had been advised that the market should be closed due to structural damage and electrical concerns over damaged circuit panels, some straw vendors were still setting up stalls in and near the entrance of the building.
“we don’t want to stop anyone from making an income but we have a duty to look after their safety,” said Helen Ebong, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Trade and Industry.
