Police have been challenged by a significant number of criminal deportees who have returned to the Bahamas with new criminal knowledge, said Chief Supt. Christopher McCoy, who heads the uniformed branch of the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
Mr. McCoy said officers have been forced to make adjustments to their policing to accommodate the new criminal element.
He said these young men have either grown up outside the country or have been imprisoned abroad, where they have picked up the latest criminal activity which they adopted upon their return.
He said the police force is working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs so that they are aware of when these persons who had served time return to the country.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Reginald Ferguson, who has responsibilty for crime, said that was just one area which has changed the face of policing.
He noted that police are seeing unprecedented crime which has filtered into almost every aspect of society from money-laundering to drug-trafficking to violence.
