A convicted drug dealer known as the “Death Boat Captain” was one of the prisoners freed from jail early for Christmas. Captain Allen Russell, 67, was released from Fox Hill Prison on Tuesday. He flew to Cat Island where he is known as “The Mayor”. A group of church members were at the jail to greet Capt Russell as he left. He has become a born-again Christian since he was jailed two years ago for drug dealing.
Family and friends reportedly threw a big ‘ art in Cat Island to welcome back Capt Russell. He was represented in his drug case by disgraced attorney and Cat Island PLP MP Philip “Brave” Davis, the Prime Minister’s former law partner. Russell is also a chief election campaign general for Davis. Russell paid a fine of $700,000 to avoid spending an additional two years in jail. He was jailed for four years for aiding Colombian gangs smuggle drugs into Cat Island. The court heard that Russell was paid $1 million by the Colombians.
Russell was nicknamed Death Boat Capt after his vessel Seahauler collided with another boat killing two people. οΎ He was never held responsible for the deaths of his Bahamian passengers even after a special commission found him guilty of negligence.
