Watch Your Back in Treasure Cay, Abaco

Bahamas Police fear Treasure Cay in Abaco has gained a reputation among villains as a “soft touch” for crime.

With so many snowbirds wintering there, leaving properties untended for several months, crooks see it as an easy target.

A spate of boat thefts in recent months, including the disappearance of several craft in the 30-35 foot range, has focused police attention on the island – and spurred calls for greater security.

“There is no doubt that Treasure Cay has been seen as an easy target for criminals,” said one resident.

“In fact, a letter found on a prisoner at Fox Hill referring to the island as a place where criminals can operate has put everyone on their guard.

“The problem is that the island has been quiet for long periods because so many residents go away during the summer months.”

However, heightened awareness of the crime problem is likely to make things tougher for thieves in future, the resident said.
