Bahamas Police are warning the public about three men, posing as detectives, who have committed several robberies within the past three days.
According to press liaison Inspector Walter Evans five complaints have been lodged with the police already against these three individuals who seem to be targeting areas such as Kennedy Subdivision and Podoleo Street.
“These men are frequenting homes between midnight and 6am. So, if anyone is knocking at your door claiming to be detectives in plainclothes, and you feel uneasy in any way, we are asking persons to contact the police immediately at 911,” he said.
Mr Evans explained that detectives out of uniform should be carrying a warrant card that has a photo identification, rank, and signature of the commissioner’s of police on it to identify themselves. He therefore advised, that if anyone claiming to be a detective cannot produce such identification, or badge, that home owners should not open their doors to them.
In one example, Mr Evans said, a family was tied up by the impostors while they rummaged through the couple’s home, stealing whatever items they wished.
Currently police have patrols out between midnight and 6am in areas the impostors seem to frequent. However, they still do not have any positive identification or even noticeable characteristics of the fake detectives to warn residents what to look for.
Therefore it is with this in mind that police are encouraging residents to be alert, and use their best judgment if they are approached by anyone claiming to be a detective out of uniform.

B2B Editor’s Note: Despite the advice, we question the wisdom of asking police officers for ID as it has been a common complaint of citizens that many officers get quite “biggety” and start abusing people who “defy” their authority.
