Island-Wide Water Shortage

New Providence residents are being urged once again to conserve water, as the supply on the island of that essential commodity has fallen to a critically low level.

The Water and Sewerage Corporation announced over the weekend that it has implemented daily water restrictions to help cope with the shortfall.

Corporation officials also appealed to members of the public to limit their usage of water wherever possible for the next several days. In a statement, Water and Sewerage officials said the low water levels were due to inclement weather, including high seas, which have prevented the transport of water from Andros to New Providence.

The corporation said “other untimely events” are also partly to blame for the supply of water falling to a critical level.

Officials assured the public, however, that an adequate supply should be available daily between 5 am and 10 am, and again from 3 pm to 10 pm.

During the off peak hours of 10 am to 3 pm, and 10 pm to 5 am water pressure will be reduced particularly in certain critical locations, the corporation cautioned.

The Water and Sewerage Corporation indicated that the restrictions would be eased as the situation improves, but did not disclose a specific date by which that improvement is expected to occur.
