Astounded at Friendly Attitude Towards Castro

I have been in Nassau numerous times in the last three years visiting our daughter and son-in-law, who is employed here.

I have become quite astounded that there are several Bahamians who seem to think the Bahamas ought to be particularly nice and friendly to Castro’s Cuba. Even the Bahamas Government going so far, in United Nations forums to vote to condemn the United States for continuing their embargo on Cuba.

From news reports it would appear parliamentarians Fred Mitchell and Leslie Miller and a columnist (someone Watkins) appear to be upset that the US is unfriendly to Cuba and such an “unfair” embargo should be lifted.

I am in the tour/travel business and I, and most of my contemporaries in the United States, expect if and when the US travel embargo on Americans going to Cuba is lifted, that up to 30-40 per cent of the cruise ships and individual shore based travel by US citizens now coming here will start going to Cuba instead.

I just hope – if there is a dramatic fall-off in cruise ships and tourists to Nassau – when the US starts permitting their citizens to go to Cuba that the Bahamian people will remember to thank Fred Mitchell, Leslie Miller and Watkins for their help and encouragement in bringing this about.
