Minister of National Security Cynthia Pratt, along with a team from her ministry visited the site to hear concerns from the vendors who complained of a number of physical and social deficiencies within the market.
Since then, the Ministry of National Security has heightened the police presence at the Straw Market and will be closing the facility next week for two days to make minor structural repairs.
According to a release from the ministry, some of the structural deficiencies include the plumbing in the bathrooms, and exposed electrical wiring.
The report also highlighted that the sale of non-Bahamian items, a large illegal migrant presence, and “various criminal activities” are all areas of concern.
As a result, undersecretary in the Ministry of National Security Peter Isaacs said that immediately following their inspection, the ministry has decided to make the police “a permanent presence” in the market.
“At any given time the market can have 600 to 800 people in the market. Given what the concerns are now they are looking at making a more dedicated presence seen,” he said.
On March 15th and 16th, the Straw Market will be closed to allow for the necessary cleaning and repairs to the infrastructure.
Also, Mrs Pratt said a town meeting will be held at the Sir Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium on March 16 at 10am for all of the vendors and “other stakeholders” in the market. She said this meeting will be particularly important given the fact that excavation has already begun on the market site for the new “state of the art” Straw Market.
