Two female police officers were reportedly involved in a no-holds barred fight yesterday.
Reports of two policewomen fighting in the East Bay Street station poured into The Guardian newsroom last night from angry bystanders who expressed shock and disgust over the incident.
According to a woman who said she witnessed the altercation, “One female officer’s back was turned and the other woman officer grabbed a radio set, walked up behind her, and hit her in, the back of her head constantly. Me and other members of the public stood there and actually watched that.”
If such a violent attack can be inflicted by one officer on another in a police station, she said, concern could be raised by members, of the public that they could be subjected to the same type of behaviour.
The woman said the female officer who was being attacked did not retaliate, merely using her hands to try and block the blows.
The caller said that shortly after the fight erupted two other officers closed the door to stop bystanders from witnessing the progress of the scuffle.
A few minutes later, however, the woman said, the bruised officer was seen being led away in a patrol car. “Something needs to happen to that officer who hit that lady,” she said. “I think this is just poor for the public to see that an officer can hit another officer from behind. That is disgraceful, and they need to address it. If she can do that to one of her own she can do it to a member of the public.”
Calls to the station went unanswered up to press time.
