Police said they discovered these guns in a water heater aboard a vessel at Arawak Cay yesterday. Police Inspector Walter Evans said that the weapons were discovered around 11am as a result of a joint operation between officers of the Drug Enforcement Unit and the Customs Department.
He said a tip from a concerned citizen led officials to a vessel that had just arrived in the capital from South Florida.
“A search was carried out on a water heater that was stored in a container on a vessel at Arawak Cay,” Inspector Evans said. “Inside the water heater officers discovered 10 handguns, seven revolvers and three semi-automatic pistols.”
Inspectors Evans said that no arrests were made in connection with the discovery, but investigations were ongoing.
Just last month, police launched a new crackdown on illegal weapons vowing to up the pressure on smugglers and others involved in the illegal trade.
Police said they are targeting persons on the street and are conducting more searches. At last report, police indicated that some 29 weapons were seized from New Providence and Grand Bahama for the year.
Police said the majority of firearms recovered by officers are recovered in the Over-the-Hill area, particularly Bain Town, the Grove, Carmichael Road, Nassau Village and Pinewood Gardens.
