Grass Roots Party Starts

Prince A Strachan, owner of the Pick and Pay produce and livestock farm on Bacardi Road, said his newly-formed United Reform Party (URP) is going to offer Bahamians a chance for proper representation in the country’s next general election. According to Mr Strachan, URP’s main focus is to promote agriculture in The Bahamas. He explained that every political party in the country should realise farming is the key to the nation’s survival. He added that no problem the country now faces is as important as the promotion of agriculture.

“Well, I watched the trend of both parties [the FNM and the PLP] and I watched and I said to myself, ‘Lord what happened to our country? We don’t even know where we are going or when we are coming.’ This kind of game in the political arena has to stop, one way or the other,” he said.

“We must get the platform straightened out – first food is the key. God told his disciples that you must till the soil for you to live.”

According to Mr Strachan, the PLP government is building houses on land that could be used for farming. He added that the present government should be focused on encouraging Bahamians to farm. However, he said if he were to win a seat in the upcoming election he would ensure the majority of food Bahamians consumed was produced locally. “Ninety per cent of the food that we are eating is coming from elsewhere.

All the politicians are doing is talking, but they are not producing anything.”

Many elected government officials have no experience, and are destroying our country because they are just selling off the land. And they are not encouraging people to get into agriculture,” he said.

In the upcoming months he promises to release a list of prospective URP candidates, who are a group of professionals ready to perform. He assures that his party would offer Bahamians a “refreshing change.”
