Police are questioning four men following the murder of Cely Smith, 45, a well-known fishing guide in Exuma. Smith was at his home in Stuart Manor on Sunday morning when four gunmen with dreadlocked hair kicked down his door and fired gunshots at him.
Mr Smith later died of his injuries at a local clinic. Sources close to the investigation report that four men were arrested by Drug Enforcement Unit officers off the Montagu foreshore.
It is believed that after shooting Mr Smith, the culprits fled to Staniel Cay where they commandeered a white coloured go-fast boat and headed for New Providence. Bashamas police, as usual, were not forthcoming about the incident.
It is understood that in addition to the four men who have been arrested, two others are being sought.
Locals suspect that drugs were involved but Chrislyn Skippings, press officer of the Royal Bahamas Police Force, said there was no information to suggest the incident was drug-related at this time.
Police have also disputed claims that the incident was linked to a fight which took place yesterday in a nightclub in Black Point, a settlement 15 minutes away from Stuart Manor, where two men got into an altercation which resulted in one of them being gun butted and flown to hospital in Nassau.
According to relatives, Mr Smith had seven children and had lived at his two-storey home in Stuart’s Manor for nearly 15 years.
On the morning of his shooting, four of his sons were present – two of whom are still in high school.
