The Bahamas Humane Society’s 3rd Annual Photography Contest sponsored by Fine Image had its awards ceremony at New Providence Community Center on Blake Road, this past Friday, September 21st.  With all of 200+ entries on display, the room was filled with participants and supporters who came to see the beautiful entries and the winners awarded wonderful prizes and ribbons.

The Summer Fun Photography Contest ran through the Summer and entries were due on September 14th.  This is the third year that the photography contest has been held and this year Fine Image came in as the sponsor, and has committed to the next two years.

Charlene Darbeau of Fine Image shared, “We are thrilled to be a part of this wonderful initiative that encourages all ages to get involved in photography, especially in the name of supporting animals in need.” There are a wide variety of categories and four age groups.

“Many people assume a BHS photo contest only means picture of Animals or dogs, but we have many categories: Animals, Black & White, Vacation Snapshots, Under Water, Potcake, The Bond, and Marvelous Faces,” says Lissa McCombe, one of the event organizers and Board Member.

New Providence Community Center generously provided their venue at a very minimal fee to use for the event and Chives Cafe donated the cost of the appetizers back towards Operation Potcake, the large spay and neuter initiative taking place in January 2013.

“The photo contest has grown over the past 3 years, every year we have received more entries and the quality keeps getting better,” explained Laura Kimble, one of the event organizers and Board Member, “The judges had such a hard time deciding the winners.”  Miss Kimble expressed her gratitude to the many local companies that donate prizes, “As a result of the great support of having the prizes donated, our costs remain minimal so the $10 per entry goes directly towards helping the animals rescued by the Bahamas Humane Society.  We are so incredibly grateful to all those companies that generously donate each year.”

There were also a greater number of entries in the ‘Aspiring Photographer’ and ‘Junior’ divisions this year.  Speaking with the mother of a participant at the event she said, “It’s wonderful to have a division for aspiring photographers (10 and under) where the younger photographers have a chance to win prizes.  It is important to encourage and foster hobbies and positive interests for the youth of The Bahamas.”
