The Nassau Guardian reports that the Bahamas telecoms watchdog the Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA) has launched an investigation into an alleged decrease in quality of service offered by the Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC). URCA’s director of policy and regulation Stephen Bereaux said that the regulator had received a number of complaints regarding BTC’s service. Bereaux noted that the complaints were backed up by evidence provided by the operator: ‘They provide certain statistics to us. It’s not as much information as we feel is necessary….but there has been a detected decrease in quality of service… in the statistics they have provided.’ Bereaux added that BTC has been cooperating with URCA on the issue.
Whilst BTC advised customers that there would be disruptions to service during its network upgrade – which saw the cellco roll out HSDPA services across the archipelago – it had expected that the problems would last only until the end of September, though glitches have persisted. BTC also suffered a nationwide blackout following a power outage: URCA’s investigation into the incident is ongoing.
