Two men denying involvement in the attempted murder and armed robbery of an off-duty American police officer vacationing in the Bahamas faced another delay in their appeal.
Bradley Saunders, 25, and Ebenezer Sherman, 22, both appeared in the Appeal Court yesterday in hopes of having their convictions for the shooting and robbery of John Casper, Jr. overturned.
Roberto Reckley, an attorney at Acting Supreme Court Justice Wayne Munroe’s firm representing Mr Sherman, asked the court for additional time to submit his arguments to the court in regards to his client’s appeal.
Justices Abdulai Conteh, Christopher Blackman and Stanley John asked Mr Reckley why he hadn’t filed his appeal submissions after being granted a two-month adjournment.
Mr Reckley first apologized for not filing his submissions before explaining that his boss’s current focus resulted in him dealing with other matters at hand.
Mr Sherman and Mr Saunders stood trial in September 2010. The trial has been adjourned until January 28, 2013.
On May 14, 2008, they allegedly attempted to murder New Jersey police officer John Casper in the Cable Beach area. It was claimed that the pair also tried to rob Joan Algios during the assault.
Mr Casper was shot in the chest when he tried to stop the attempted armed robbery on Ruby Avenue, near the home of Prime Minister Perry Christie.
Mr Sherman was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to 25 years at Her Majesty’s Prison.
Both Mr Sherman and Mr Saunders were convicted on the attempted armed robbery charge.
