Bahamian police have yet to make a breakthrough in their investigations of a major car theft operation that involves vehicles being stolen in Florida and smuggled into the Bahamas in shipping containers.
It is believed that the operation is abetted by corrupt Bahamian police and customs officers along with corrupt Bahamian governnment officals.
The shipping containers are supposed to contain only food for a local grocery store.
An article in the Nassau Guardian did not name the food store, but quoted Superintendent Morey Evans, officer in charge of Exuma and the Southern Bahamas, who said:
“We got some information [about] some uncustomed goods believed to be beers [that] were stashed on this fast ferry traveling from George Town to Nassau.
“So on checking those vehicles we discovered some beers in the vehicles and as we examined them [the cars] to check for ownership we discovered that the vehicles were licensed in Nassau but the decals were not corresponding with the license plates. So recognizing that they may have been stolen, I moved the vehicles from the boat.”
When the vehicles were run through the sytem it was discovered they were stolen.
The trailers were brought into the country on a boat that travels directly into Exuma from Florida.
In addition to the local investigations, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is allegedly conducting investigations in Florida.
