After a hiatus last year, the people of Green Turtle Cay are highly anticipating the 2013 return of their beloved Island Roots Heritage Festival, scheduled for May 3 – 5.
The organizing committee is eager to once again host this very interesting and historic festival, which encourages old and new patrons to come together for a fun-filled weekend, commemorating the Sister City relationship shared between New Plymouth, Green Turtle Cay and Key West, Florida.
This May’s event marks the ninth year of fostering and strengthening the relationship between the two communities dating back to the 1800s. The committee will begin the weekend of festivities by hosting a welcome reception at the Green Turtle Club & Marina for the out of town guests and local dignitaries.
Over the next two days, the festival will feature a strong lineup of entertainers who will definitely have the crowd on its feet. Performing will be the Royal Bahamas Defense Force Marching & Pop Bands, the Gully Roosters, New Entry Band and a host of other local talent.
Also scheduled to make a first time appearance at the event is well-known Bahamian artist and songwriter, Eddie Minnis, who will be displaying some of his engaging paintings, which ingeniously capture Bahamian life on canvas. Also in attendance will be some 20 vendors who will present for purchase, a wide range of tasty Bahamian cuisine as well as a variety of other unique, ‘made in the Bahamas’ wares, such as: jewelry, straw work, conch-shell artistic pieces, wood carvings and much more.
Along with the delightful sounds, sights and tastes that are linked to this festival, each year, the committee effectively highlights and creates a strong awareness of the rich heritage and culture of the local community, through informative talks, educational displays, tours and interactive activities that are very much a part of the festival’s schedule of events.
Family and friends attending the festival should know that there will be a daily entry fee of $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for children. Green Turtle Ferry will be providing additional round-trip ferry transfers throughout the day and evening from its Treasure Cay location.
