NASSAU, The Bahamas – Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture the Hon. Charles Maynard applauded the success of the winners and participants in the E. Clement Bethel National Arts Festival and offered up his views on the future of the initiative, which, he said, has “evolved into a very comprehensive artistic movement” since its initial inception in 1959.
“In order for the festival to continue to progress, we must develop a clear, comprehensive national vision which takes into account the views of the artists and enthusiasts alike,” Minister Maynard said at the Festival’s Award Ceremony and Reception, on November 1, 2010, at Government House. “Through the implementation of such a plan, we will maximise our nation’s collective artistic potential. ”
Minister Maynard said that, in this vein, his ministry has teamed with Ivory Global Promotions to afford the Festival’s National winners with the opportunity for a intense summer music workshop to expand their talents. “In 2008 and 2009 we sent a dozen young men to the Washington Jazz institute (Washington, D.C.) as part of this programme.,” Minister Maynard said. “This year, the programme was held in Nassau and over 40 young men and women benefited from the training by instructors of the institute.”
Also, he said, four National winners will benefit from a new partnership with “You in Music” and will travel to Nashville, Tennessee, for a special professional recording session of original songs written by Paul and Tanya Hanna.
“Over the years, many former winners have continued to excel in the Cultural sector and some have become true cultural icons in their disciplines,” Minister Maynard added. “We believe that these partnerships will lead to even greater successes in the future.”
Minister Maynard said that the 2010 E. Clement Bethel National Arts Festival was the most successful in terms of the “exceptional level” of participation.
He added that the Festival has become an event that fosters keen competition among its participants and motivates them to achieve excellence. “This year, the talents and skills of several public schools and choirs who participated in the Festival were highlighted during the 37th Independence Celebrations, which focused on our youth” Minister Maynard said.
He also thanked all schools, principals, students, parents and other individuals that supported the participants on their “journey to excellence” and congratulated them on their success in the E. Clement Bethel National Arts Festival.
“I also wish to extend a sincere thank you to all of the adjudicators and those who assist with the planning and execution of the Festival each year,” Minister Maynard said. “The Festival’s adjudication team went to great lengths to cover all of the participating Islands. We are most appreciative of your invaluable support and contributions.
“To the participants, I to congratulate you on your achievement, and I wish you continued success in your future endeavours.”
