Emergency services are a critical component to a health care organization, and its services are instrumental to patients suffering in an emergency situation. To ensure that Doctors Hospital’s Emergency Department was meeting the goals and standards of a JCI accredited hospital, Doctors Hospital implemented a state-of-the-art patient tracking and integrated data system within the Emergency Department.
Doctors Hospital is proud to announce they are now live with the Health Information Management software MediTech’s Emergency Department Modular (EDM) application. The EDM allows the Emergency Room to minimize wait times and expedite a patient’s treatment while managing the patient’s experience with efficiency, accuracy, quality and safety.
According to Dr. James Iferenta, Clinical Director Emergency Services, “The EDM system will help staff reduce the wait times for patients and expedite their treatment resulting in a streamlined process between physicians, the Lab, Pharmacy and Rehabilitation departments. Laboratory and Radiology results are also returned quickly and accurately via the EDM and MediTech systems. The system allows Emergency Department staff to manage patient flow from a single point of entry. Furthermore, the EDM and MediTech ordering capabilities have now allowed for an even greater patient safety environment.”
Increasing value to patients, the EDM system follows patients throughout their visit in the Emergency Room, including how long they have been waiting, what test results are pending, and if any treatment has been administered. Assisting physicians in managing their Emergency Department patients quickly and efficiently, it allows clinicians a quick and easy method for completing documentation, which is then incorporated into the patient’s electronic medical record.
This is also a key factor for efficiently and safely treating returning patients as their previous documentation such as allergies and medication history are available to the physicians in the patient’s medical record for the proficient implementation of care. This patient safety process takes place from the moment patients enter the Emergency Department until their point of discharge, and stores the historical patient data for future visits in the health information management system.
“With our new JCI (Joint Commission International) accreditation, we knew that our next step was to move away from a paper-based system to an electronic medical record,” says Marsha L. Minns, RN, Coordinator of Doctors Hospital’s Emergency Department. “We are excited about being automated, as we move to further improve on our records of both clinician efficiency and patient safety.”
Following best practices in the healthcare industry, the success of Doctors Hospital’s EDM implementation and JCI accreditation has been an additional advancement for the organization and benefit to patients receiving emergency services at Doctors Hospital.
