U.S. Embassy volunteers gathered on West beach in New providence, Bahamas, on February 17 for their fourth weekly beach cleanup since the beginning of the year. The effort was spearheaded by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) in collaboration with the Bahamas Ministry of Environment to help ensure that the Bahamas remains “green, clean and pristine.”
U.S. Coast Guard Deputy Director, Tonya Kelley, has been the driving force behind the weekly cleanups because, as she puts it, she takes her role as a guest in The Bahamas very seriously. Local beach trash increased just before Christmas when a vessel marooned off the coast of Blackbeard Cay caused countless items to wash up on shore.
