Given the high regard for educational health forums and lectures, there are already a number of planned communication campaigns with intent of addressing pressing societal ills to complex medical issues. Various sessions are being facilitated every 3rd Thursday of the month, which have been developed in conjunction with Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency, University of Miami and Doctors Hospital.
On Thursday March 17, 2011 Doctors Hospital offered its initial series of lectures on Organ Donation and Transplantation. Dr. Robin Roberts, Urologist/ Renal Transplant Surgeon, relayed pertinent information to the public regarding Organ Donation and Transplant and other health related matters associated with same.
More specifically, Dr. Roberts gave a detailed explanation concerning some frequently asked questions about kidney transplantation, the availability of education for patients, living donors and family members. However, the entire process accounts for recipients and donors to receive extensive individual instructions and education by the Doctors Hospital multidisciplinary transplant team.

Organ donation and transplantation are talked about often but do people really understand the scope of it all? Organ transplantation is a surgical removal of any organ or tissue from one person to another, commonly known as the donor and the recipient. Some organs include: kidney, heart, livers, lungs, pancreas and intestines. Organ donation is when you allow your organ to be removed from you and given to someone else. For the most part, these organs would have come from an individual who died; however, living persons have and can also donate organs.
There is no age limit as to who can donate an organ but if you are someone with certain medical conditions, you may not be able to donate. These medical conditions include HIV, brain cancer and some severe and current infections.
Doctors Hospital offers a comprehensive program designed to facilitate patients seeking kidney transplants, even those with chronic renal and end- stage renal diseases. The services offered also include evaluation and management that would prepare the patient for the transplant phase. Since the first operation was performed by Dr. Robin Roberts in 1992, Doctors Hospital has expanded its surgical techniques and improved anti-rejection protocols. Some features include a full service Dialysis Center, Access Management and the Living Donor Transplantation.
As the demand for organ donors deepens, the need far exceeds the availability on any waiting list. Granted this may be the case, Doctors Hospital veteran leading nurse Cherry Martin-Knowles says that, “donating an organ can be a delicate situation, hence voluntary. Besides, the work up process can take up to a year of processing before confirming a match and compatibility.”
Martin further commented, “Having an opportunity to receive an organ affords you longevity or simply, a better quality of life as opposed to going on dialysis.” Unfortunately, the lack of health insurance and poverty contribute to the real barriers overwhelming numbers of patients are faced with.
