Armed Robbery on Bay Street During Peak Tourist Activity

Crime in the Bahamas is out of control and nothing proves that more than an armed robbery of a prominent Bay Street jewellery store while five cruise ships are in town.

Thugs, allegedly armed with high-powered weapons, stormed their way into the John Bull store on Bay Street and made off with close to one million dollars worth of expensive watches.

Tourists and local shoppers were terrified as they watched two men wearing Scream movie-type masks smash open a Rolex case and pluck out over a dozen watches, each valued at over $50,000. The exact number of watches has not yet been determined.

There were five cruise ships docked in the harbour at the time and Bay Street was bustling with tourists.

The robbers escaped in a silver Honda which was found abandoned on Shirley Street a short time later.

Apparently, despite similar previous incidents, and numerous promises by the police, to maintain vigilant patrols of Bay Street during peak tourist times, there were no police officers in sight at the time of the robbery.

The Ministry of Tourism refused to comment on the matter.
